A Message from
Dean Kate Korgan

“A good city is like a good party – people stay longer than really necessary because they are enjoying themselves.” — Jan Gehl, architect and urban design consultant

The new Professional Development Academy Commons and the Postdoctoral Scholar & Graduate Faculty Commons aren’t cities, of course, but they are new communal spaces that will foster conversations and relationships beyond academic silos, and strengthen the fabric of our graduate community.

2019 Rebel Grad Slam Results
Nam Hoang, a Ph.D. student in Chemistry, won the 2019 Rebel Grad Slam competition on Nov. 1. The College of Sciences will hold on to the Rebel Grad Slam 'stache trophy until next year's competition.

Rebel Grad Slam, an annual event hosted by the Graduate College, challenges graduate students to present their research in a condensed and compelling way using only three minutes and one slide.

Preliminary and semi-final rounds throughout the week culminated in a final round featuring nine students representing disciplines ranging from interdisciplinary health sciences to hospitality administration. Second place went to Jason Avedesian (Interdisciplinary Health Sciences), third place to Johanna Andrews (Public Health) and Michael Wong (Interdisciplinary Health Sciences), and audience choice to Hoang. Thesis and Dissertation Defense Reminder
Just a friendly reminder about some of the guidelines surrounding thesis and dissertation defenses:
  • Graduate students completing a thesis, dissertation, or doctoral project are required to demonstrate their ability to select a specific problem or topic, master the literature on it, gather/create and analyze/present relevant data/scholarship/creative products, engage in original research, scholarship, or creative activity, and prepare a well-written final document that is successfully defended publicly and to their entire Graduate Advisory Committee (GAC).
  • Students must be enrolled in three graduate credits during the term the oral defense is conducted and the student intends to graduate.
  • The expectation is that thesis and dissertation defenses will be conducted on campus and with the defending student, committee chair, and other committee members present.
  • Please refer to the Graduation Deadlines webpage.
