A Message from

“A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.” - Lao Tzu

Welcome back! As we embark on a fresh academic year, the Graduate College team is excited to roll out several new programs and initiatives to help advance our MSI Tier One aspirations. We remain very involved in UNLV’s Top Tier mission and are committed to promoting excellence and student success at all levels, in all programs.

The road to Tier One is long, winding, and can only be traveled one step at a time. Some of these small steps toward Tier One -- including the roll-out of the Grad Rebel Gateway Phase II, DocuSign online forms, Curriculog for course and program review, and a Student Lifecycle model that is fully integrated in both our grad RPC efforts and our Professional Development Academy programs -- are included in the News & Announcements section of this newsletter issue. I encourage you to learn more by visiting this webpage we’ve created exclusively to address these changes (many of which were recommended by Top Tier committees and/or the Graduate Council) to improve processes and services.

While you’re on our website, please take a look around at the newly redesigned Faculty Resources page. We hope you find the webpage, as well as a new calendar we’ve created just for you, helpful. We have created similar calendars for your students and postdocs, too. Other inside pages of our GC website will be updated throughout the semester, so please send prospective and current students, as well as your faculty and staff colleagues, to our website where they can easily find the information and resources they need for graduate student and faculty success.

As a primarily service-oriented unit, we strive to identify which new projects, initiatives, and services will have the most positive impact on the graduate community. You can review our Graduate College committee and Graduate Top Tier committee charges to see some of our plans for this year. It is good to have friends, collaborators, and allies on journeys like this, so I always welcome your input, suggestions, and participation! You can reach me anytime by emailing either Graduate.Dean@unlv.edu or kate.korgan@unlv.edu, or by calling my office at x50446.

Warm wishes for a stimulating and productive academic year ahead. May you take all the steps you need this year to realize your goals! I invite you to walk with us, too, by participating in Graduate College workshops for faculty/staff, attending Graduate College events, and encouraging your students to participate in our large array of career and professional development workshops and programs through our Professional Development Academy. Though we can’t know exactly which challenges, opportunities, and successes we’ll end up sharing by the end of the academic year, I do know that it’ll be more fun, meaningful, and productive if we journey through 2018-2019 together. The Graduate College team and I look forward to working with you!

Cheers,

Kate Korgan, Ph.D.
