Program Extensions: How to Extend Your I-20 or DS-2019
F-1 and J-1 students are allotted a specific amount of time to complete their academic program on their I-20 or DS-2019. If your I-20 or DS-2019 will expire before you graduate, you must complete a Program Extension. Like everything else, you must present a valid reason to extend your immigration document. Common reasons include:
-
Changing majors/minors or academic programs,
-
Medical illness,
-
Unexpected research issues (not applicable to students who simply need more time to write their thesis/dissertation),
-
Scheduling conflicts, and
-
Other compelling academic reasons
Do you think you might need more time to finish your academic program? Discuss your estimated graduation with your Academic Advisor and, if you do, please speak with an ISSS advisor to determine if you are eligible for a Program Extension. ISSS advising times are listed below.

The Competition Heats Up at the International Cook-Off
Around 560 attendees, volunteers, and staff attended this culinary competition that pit six teams of students against each other, each representing their home country’s traditional cuisine with an entree and a beverage intended to win over the panel of judges as well as the crowd. In addition to the judges recognizing the top three teams, attendees were also able to vote for their favorite team and recipe for the People’s Choice Award. This year’s teams represented the countries of Vietnam, Columbia, India, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, and China.
