Hello graduate assistants,

I hope you’re doing well and enjoying the end of the summer. As a friendly reminder, please remember that you are required to enroll in a minimum of six graduate credits. If you have not registered or are changing your schedule, please be sure that you enroll in your six graduate credits as soon as possible so there are no adverse impacts on your GA contract.

As we prepare for the fall semester, I wanted to share some other important information:

Graduate Assistant Orientation
Graduate Assistant Orientation is being held virtually this year. Modules were added to all graduate assistants’ WebCampus/Canvas accounts on Aug. 10. Given that we are working in a dynamic and changing educational environment, returning graduate assistants are required to view the modules and complete the brief quizzes in order to be sure that they have all the up-to-date information they need. Modules must be completed before Sept. 3; however, they will be available in WebCampus/Canvas throughout the fall semester for you to reference, as needed.

Remote Work Accommodations
As you plan for the fall and spring semesters, as always, please work with your graduate coordinators or GA supervisors regarding your GA assignment. GAs who are at elevated risk or have special family care responsibilities as a result of COVID-19 may qualify for a remote work accommodation if their GA assignment may be done from off-campus. Please note the following guidelines:
  • If GAs need accommodations for their work, they must follow the process laid out by HR and contact the leave office at hrleave@unlv.edu indicating their request to remote work due to 1.) higher risk as identified by the CDC, 2.) living or caring for someone who is high risk in accordance with the CDC, or 3.) experiencing child care issues related to COVID-19.

  • GAs with approved HR accommodations will need to work with their GA supervisors to confirm that they can do their GA work remotely. If accommodations are simply not feasible due to the nature of the GA work, requests for remote GA assignments may be denied.

  • GAs are not eligible for administrative leave with pay.
Strategies for Online Learning Success
The Office of Online Education is hosting a town hall about online learning strategies for students, parents, partners, and housemates. Students are invited to join the town hall at 3 p.m. on Aug. 14.

As always, we are available to help in any way we can, especially as we transition into what’s sure to be an atypical fall semester. Please reach out to GradFinancialSvc@unlv.edu with any questions or concerns. Your GA team is eager to support you and help!

All my best,
