Program Extensions: How to Extend Your I-20 or DS-2019

F-1 and J-1 students are allotted a specific amount of time to complete their academic program on their I-20 or DS-2019. If your I-20 or DS-2019 will expire before you graduate, you must complete a Program Extension. Like everything else, you must present a valid reason to extend your immigration document. Common reasons include:

  • Changing majors/minors or academic programs,
  • Medical illness,
  • Unexpected research issues (not applicable to students who simply need more time to write their thesis/dissertation),
  • Scheduling conflicts, and
  • Other compelling academic reasons.

Do you think you might need more time to finish your academic program? Discuss your estimated graduation with your Academic Advisor and, if you do, please speak with an ISSS advisor to determine if you are eligible for a Program Extension. ISSS advising times are listed below.

The Step After College

Finding jobs can be difficult in a foreign country because international students don’t know where to look or find the right opportunities. The Career Exploration and Development Center in Kent State helps students find jobs during and after college and with their career needs, ranging from exploring career and major options to providing assistance with finding jobs and internships.
