About a year ago, we began to notice that fellowships weren’t clearly defined across campus, that different fellows were getting different benefits, and that we weren’t tracking and reporting fellowship awards well as a campus. So, we set out to work with the Foundation to identify existing fellowships, clarify the definition of fellowships, explicitly differentiate them from scholarships, and define the benefits awarded to UNLV graduate fellows.

Since then, we have worked with a number of campus groups, and I’m happy to share that our exercise is now complete. You can find the full fellowship guidelines here.

A few key parts of the document include the following:
  • Fellowships generally cover tuition, fees, student health insurance, and provide a stipend.
  • Fellowships should be awarded in collaboration with the Graduate College and be managed through the Grad Rebel Gateway for the purposes of Top Tier tracking and metrics.
  • When new fellowships are being created, the Graduate College should be notified immediately, and we will review criteria to determine when an out-of-state tuition waiver may be approved. Our goal is to offer out-of-state tuition waivers for fellows.
  • Fellowships are generally awarded to doctoral students but may be available to master’s students.
  • Fellowship stipends are a minimum of $15K per year, but may be higher. The suggested rate is at least $20K, plus funds for tuition/fees (approximately $8K more) to make these positions prestigious; fully support our fellows; and allow them to focus on their research, scholarship, practice, and creative activities.
If you have any questions about fellowships, please contact Director of Development Liz Kahane (895-3429) or Executive Director of Graduate Financial Services & Business Operations Brianne Heinle (895-1233).

Thank you,
