A Message from
Dean Kate Korgan

Greetings,

What a year it’s been! I’m so proud of all that we have accomplished together this academic year and I’m so grateful for your part in our collective success. Please join me in celebrating a productive academic year that included a number of new initiatives to advance our shared goals, some of which are listed below:

Grad Rebel Gateway phase II and DocuSign online forms: In January, we launched the second phase of the Grad Rebel Gateway, taking it from an admissions-focused portal for prospective students to a personalized portal for current students. With the launch of phase II, we phased out paper forms and gave students the ability to submit and track all Graduate College forms electronically.

Admissions/R2PC: A total of 27 more new doctoral students enrolled this academic year compared to last academic year. Overall graduate enrollment for spring 2019 increased by 2.2% over spring 2018. We’ve processed 100 more graduation applications this semester than we did last spring semester.

Financial Services: This year, we moved in-person GA contract signing sessions to an online onboarding process, meaning more than 1,000 GAs no longer had to come to campus for an in-person information session and contract signing.

Professional Development Academy: This academic year, our Professional Development Academy drew more than 1,000 students to close to 80 workshops. More than 200 students participated in programs like Post-Master’s Career Pathways, our yearlong certifications, Grad Rebel Writing Boot Camp, Grad Rebel Advantage, and more.

#RebelsGive: During UNLV’s inaugural giving day, we received more than 215 gifts totaling more than $16,000. Those gifts are supporting graduate student scholarships; the Professional Development Academy; the Graduate College General Fund; and graduate student research, conference, and travel expenses.

Curriculog: Helping streamline curriculum changes, we launched Curriculog, a paperless, automated system that allows faculty members to submit, review, approve, route, and track curriculum proposals from creation to final approval.

Understanding Ph.D. Career Pathways for Program Improvement Grant: The Graduate College was awarded a $50,000 grant from the Council of Graduate Schools (CGS) to participate in an Understanding Ph.D. Career Pathways for Program Improvement project, a multi-institution effort to collect and analyze data on Ph.D. career pathways in STEM and humanities fields. We’ve been working diligently to survey current Ph.D. students as well as alumni who earned their degree three, eight, and 15 years ago, and we’ll continue this work in the second year of the grant.

Interdisciplinary graduate programs: After two years of Top Tier committee review and campus recommendations, the provost’s office approved the proposal to house interdisciplinary graduate programs in the Graduate College. As such, interdisciplinary graduate programs that involve faculty from two or more colleges will now be structurally located in the Graduate College. Interdisciplinary Health Sciences has moved to the Graduate College, and we have several new interdisciplinary programs in the new program review pipeline. If you’re interested in building an interdisciplinary program, please reach out to me.

Office of Postdoctoral Affairs: With the help of its Top Tier committee, the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs drafted a budget proposal, developed an exit survey, updated climate and onboarding surveys, created a postdoc handbook, and more. The Office this academic year also hosted two annual events co-sponsored by the Desert Research Institute and four social gatherings. The Office continues to work with deans, faculty, and campus partners to grow our postdoc community.

Carnegie Ranking: As you know, UNLV was classified a “very high research activity university” by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education in December. This was an incredible achievement that elevated us to the ranks of just 130 institutions nationwide that hold this status.

These successes would not have been possible without your input, support, generosity, and tireless work, and without a fantastic Graduate College team that impresses me more every year. Kudos to all!

Please join the Graduate College team and me to celebrate and recognize the important contributions you have all made to these initiatives and our students’ success at our Graduate College Awards & Faculty Club Reception on May 13 from 2:30-4:30 p.m. in Tam Hall.

With gratitude,
Kate
