GRAD REBEL MENTOR
May 2018

A Message from
Dean Kate Korgan

Hello and welcome to the inaugural issue of our Graduate College newsletter for faculty and staff! We’re calling it the Grad Rebel Mentor because in it we’ll be sharing tips, helpful info, and best practices for faculty, staff, and student success, as well as upcoming deadlines, invitations to events, and recognition of graduate faculty, staff, and student accomplishments. Expect to see the Grad Rebel Mentor in your inbox about once a month during the academic year.

Pablo Picasso said, “Inspiration exists, but it has to find you working.”

As part of UNLV’s inspired mission to reach Top Tier status by 2025, we have been working hard to put a spotlight on graduate education and its value to students, Southern Nevada, and the world beyond. First, we’ve rebranded the Graduate College to create a look/feel across platforms that conveys energy and excitement, but also visualizes our Grad College core values of excellence, equity, diversity, opportunity, and impact. Second, we’ve updated our tagline to “Inspired, Innovative, Impactful.” We’ve long described the Graduate College enterprise with the words Inspiration, Innovation, and Impact, but from here forward we’re using “Inspired, Innovative, Impactful.” It’s a nod to our inspired graduate student scholars, who are passionate and committed to their work; our innovative faculty thinkers, who are at the forefront of their fields; and our impactful collective work as UNLV’s graduate community, which makes a difference in the lives of graduate students whose research, scholarship, creative and entrepreneurial activities positively impact the world around us.

None of this would be possible without all of us working together. We’ve created this monthly newsletter to build a strong, thriving community of graduate faculty and staff, and we are also sending a weekly graduate student newsletter containing info about the week’s activities and events, upcoming deadlines, and important announcements. Finally, we’ll be sending a newsletter to our alumni, donors, supporters, and community constituents once each semester. Together, we hope that these strategic and targeted messaging efforts help us get valuable information and updates to our multiple constituencies in an effective and engaging way.

I hope that you find our Grad Rebel Mentor newsletter useful and interesting! I also invite you to please reach out anytime if you have any suggestions for content or information to share with the graduate community. Thank you, as always, for your time and support!

All my best,

Kate Korgan, Ph.D.
