A Message from
Dean Kate Korgan |
Dear graduate faculty colleagues,
It is becoming trite to say that it is a challenging semester, but I genuinely hope you are doing well and taking care of yourself in the midst of everything going on around us. Fortunately, COVID cases in the UNLV community are far fewer than the infection rate in Clark County, so we have that to be thankful for this fall.
The pandemic has forced us all to change – in the way we teach; mentor; engage students; and do our research, scholarship, or creative activities. If there is a silver lining, it is that the crises of 2020 have pushed us to tap into our resilience and flexibility in order to adapt. My deepest hope and most focused vision looking forward is that we pivot out of the pandemic, recession, and social justice crises in ways that expedite positive changes and leave us transformed and stronger as a graduate community.
We invite you to take a peek behind the curtain at the accommodations we’ve made since the spring to support students during this pandemic, encourage continued progression, and help them move toward completion. What this spreadsheet doesn’t capture are the larger discussions about visions and values that guide us and broader conversations about the meaning, value, and possibilities of graduate education in the 21st century.
To this end, we have convened a new Pivot Planning Committee to lead these discussions. We invite you to review the AY20-21 membership list for all of our committees, and I encourage you to reach out to your college representative with questions, suggestions, or ideas for the Pivot Planning Committee or any other committee. Your input and service on these committees is incredibly important in shaping the future of graduate education at UNLV. We value and appreciate your engagement.
Thank you, as always, for all you do for our students, during good times and bad. I know that together we will pivot in the right direction to realize an even more diverse, just, transparent, and dynamic student-centered future and thriving graduate community of scholars.
Take care and be well,
Kate Korgan, Ph.D.
