GRAD REBEL MENTOR
October 2018

A Message from
Dean Kate Korgan

“Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” -Helen Keller

Higher education isn’t a solitary business – faculty governance, student governments, and committees galore exemplify the collaborative nature of university life. With a core mission to support the entire graduate community, everything we do in the Graduate College is in collaboration with graduate faculty, graduate students, and other units on campus. As a service unit, we are a collaboration hub.

Increasingly, the Graduate College is also engaged with the broader Southern Nevada community. Educating lawmakers, thought leaders, and business people about the importance of graduate education and the impact our graduate students make in the workforce and in their communities is important work. So, too, is fundraising to generate new sources of support to promote graduate student success. Our path to Top Tier most definitely requires campus dedication and collaboration, as well as strong community support and engagement. The month of October is chock-full of activities to cultivate these collaborative relationships and build a strong network of support for Top Tier graduate education at UNLV.

On Oct. 11 and 12, we’re participating in UNLV’s inaugural giving day, #RebelsGive. Those two days will give community members, alumni, students, faculty and staff an opportunity to come together in support of UNLV. To help raise money for graduate student research, conference, and travel support; our Professional Development Academy; graduate student scholarships; and the Graduate College general fund, we’re hosting the following events and challenges:

#RebelsGive Kickoff
Thursday, Oct. 11 | 10 a.m.-12 p.m. | Lied Library Graduate Student Commons
In partnership with the Graduate & Professional Student Association, we’re hosting a free pizza party to encourage student involvement in our giving days.

#RebelsGive Birthday Bash
Thursday, Oct. 11 | 4-6 p.m. | Student Union 209
We’re hosting a free ice cream sundae social to generate #RebelsGive support. We’re calling it a Libra birthday bash because for every 20 gifts received to any Graduate College fund by 6 p.m. on Oct. 11, other Libras and I will brave a pie in the face during the birthday bash (oh, the things we do to raise money for our students!). C’mon out for a free sundae and your #RebelsGive donation will fund more pies in my face. Wish you had more money for GAs? Give a small gift to the Graduate College #RebelsGive fund to support our students and then hit me with a pie!

The BIG Challenge: Every gift, big or small, helps increase funding for GPSA sponsorships to support graduate and professional student conference travel and research
The GPSA provides funding for graduate and professional student research, conference/event travel, and other scholarly activities. The first 100 gifts received to a Graduate College fund during #RebelsGive will unlock an additional $10,000 for the GPSA sponsorship budget, allowing the Association to support more students. If we make it to 125 gifts, it’ll unlock $12,500 for GPSA awards! 150 gifts? $15,000 for GPSA awards this year!

Also on Oct. 12, we’re inviting community members and the campus community to join us for the third annual Graduate Showcase. This event, which will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. in the SEB Auditorium and Lobby, will feature some of the best and brightest graduate students from across UNLV who have competed for the chance to present their research at this special event. The reception afterward is a great chance to relax; nosh on some nibbles; and network with friends, colleagues, and students. Please join us!

And then there’s Homecoming, which has been pumped with new life and energy this year. There are so many reasons for community members and alumni to come to campus and join the celebration. Just as examples, during the week of Oct. 15, we’re participating in the Rebel Homecoming Movie Night, Annual Alumni Awards, Rebel Homecoming Festival, Scarlet & Gray Homecoming Parade, and more.

The thread that ties all of these activities together is community-building. I am so excited that we’re continuing to strengthen our ties with the UNLV graduate community, Southern Nevada, and our worldwide alumni network through these activities. We hope you’ll join us, too.

Go Grad Rebels!

Warmly,

Kate Hausbeck Korgan, Ph.D.
Interim Dean
