A Message from
Dean Kate Korgan

Hello! I hope that the spring semester has been positive, productive, and inspiring for you so far.

The end of last year and beginning of this year have been very exciting for us at UNLV. As you likely know by now, the university reached Carnegie R1 status in December much earlier than we’d anticipated. This is an incredible achievement that is certainly worth celebrating! But you know what they say about good work … it is rewarded with more work.

Now, it’s more important than ever for us to focus and work hard to maintain our Carnegie R1 “Very High Research Activity” status and continue on our road to excellence. One key way to do this is by maximizing our graduation numbers from Summer 2019 through Spring 2020. The Summer 2019 through Spring 2020 academic year graduation numbers will impact our NSHE performance pool funding, and our doctoral graduation numbers during this same period will be used to assess the next round of Carnegie rankings. So this will be a critical time to meet, or surpass, our graduation goals.

Beyond our R1 designation and our concentrated efforts to maintain our new status, we continue to be wholly committed to our Top Tier efforts. While R1 is a prestigious recognition of our national research ranking, we continue to focus on and strive to achieve our UNLV Top Tier goals across all of our pillars of excellence by 2025. I’m confident that we can get there as long as we’re unwavering in our focus.

It’s also an exciting time for us here at the Graduate College. In January, I was honored to be appointed permanent dean of the Graduate College after serving as interim dean since 2013. Thank you so much for the outpouring of support in response to this announcement, and for all your support, collaboration, and inspiration over the last six years. As I step into this new role, I am committed to making a positive impact by advancing our Top Tier goals, working to retain our R1 status, strongly advocating for excellence in graduate education, enhancing student success and financial support, and growing and strengthening our diverse graduate community of students and scholars, while expanding our ties to the community. None of this would be possible without you, and I am so grateful for graduate faculty colleagues like you.

Thank you and ... onward!

All my best,

Kate Korgan
