Working Off-Campus: Curricular Practical Training (CPT)

It is important to always get authorization before starting any off-campus employment. Curricular Practical Training (CPT) is an opportunity to gain experience in your field of study while you are still enrolled as a student. You could be eligible for CPT if:

  • You are in valid F-1 status at the time of application and have completed one academic year of full-time studies.
  • You abide by all rules surrounding full-time course registration while on CPT.
  • The CPT experience is either:
    • Satisfying a program requirement placed on all students (full-time registration may vary based on program in this case), or
    • Satisfying an elective, which will require that you enroll in either an internship course in your academic program or a co-op course through Career Exploration and Development.
If you are eligible, there are a few other important considerations to keep in mind:
  • You will need to work with multiple departments to approve your CPT request, so plan 3-4 weeks in advance to ensure we have enough time to process your request before your CPT start date.
  • You must abide by all rules surrounding full-time course registration while on CPT. You need approval from ISSS before dropping below the full-time enrollment requirement via a Reduced Course Load request.
  • The CPT experience must relate to your major, not your minor.
  • Volunteering is permitted, as long as you are not getting compensated.
  • You must be authorized for CPT before you can begin working.
Always speak to an ISSS Advisor before accepting any employment or internship to verify your next course of action. Find out your eligibility for CPT during one of the ISSS advising times listed below.

An Exploration of Mood and Light, Mother Language Day from 12-1 pm in White Hall Room 200, the Gerald H. Read Center
Our international students, already away from home and using English as a 2nd language can feel a sense of loss. Couple those feelings with the dark and cold days of winter here in Ohio, and depression, loneliness and anxiety may appear. Alex Silverio, a Puerto Rican student, wrote a paper for one of her classes about SAD--Seasonal Affect Disorder—and ways to take care of skin and hair in the cold weather. It made us think about the effect of mood and resiliency in the dark and cold February. Alex will work with intern Esther Sijuwade and international students in designing this exploration of light and mood. Refreshments will be available. FLASHperks will be available for undergraduate students. Attendance verification will take place for those who require students to attend.

Population can be linked to global challenges ranging from traffic congestion and pollution to loss of biodiversity and climate change. These lessons engage students in many of the environmental, social, and economic issues impacted by population. Hands-on, engaging, and fun, these activities challenge students to tackle real global issues through data and graphic analysis, lab simulations, role-playing games, argumentative writing, and more. Each lesson can stand alone or easily be inserted into established units and course plans. Practical and many resources are shared. FLASHperks will be available, and a light lunch is provided.
